All Stages

Optimal

Notes:

  • Holding Y does not make you swim faster.
  • Both kongs swim at the same speed and ride Enguarde at the same speed.
  • The kongs have 3 different heights at which they can do a swim, a high swim, a low swim, and a neutral swim, depending on whether you're holding up/down/or nothing on the dpad. If you want to swim upwards quickly, be sure to hold up on the dpad and mash B as fast as you can!
  • When mounting Enguarde, press up and B right before landing on him to get a boost upwards (Animal Buddy Fast Start)
  • Avoid touching any walls on the way up immediately after grabbing Enguarde in order to get past the first Croctopus. If you bump into a wall, you'll have to clip through him (Enguarde Invincibility Frames)
  • If you try and lunge too soon with Enguarde after lunging previously, nothing will come out (dropped lunge). To prevent this, plinking both the B and Y buttons for each lunge gives you a better chance of not dropping your lunges and getting the optimal timing.
  • Cutting corners: while hugging a vertical wall, you are able to thrust around its corner right before reaching the top or bottom of the wall, allowing you to start moving horizontally earlier than you would if you were to wait until fully reaching the edge of the wall.
  • Shark Skip: At around 0:33 in the video is a technique called Shark Skip, which consists of lunging through the section after the 2nd Enguarde box without thrusting through the shark. To skip the Chomps Jr, simply cut the corner leading up to the section and do 3 lunges almost as quickly as possible. The tricky part comes next - you must now move upwards towards the right wall while facing right. Keep facing right until you pass the Chomps on your way up. Once you pass the Chomps, begin holding left to avoid bonking the ceiling (while still holding up). Ultimately it's not skipping the Chomps Jr that's saving time, it's being able to maneuver upwards more quickly than if you were to lunge through the shark. This trick saves less than 0.25 seconds and is only worth it if you're going for a 3:38 or better world 1 time.

Shark Skip Alternative

Notes:

  • By delaying the 2nd lunge in the sequence, you can ensure that you will lunge through the shark and be set on a safe path for the upcoming ascent.

  • This visual is a representation of the ideal path one would take while swimming around this corner optimally.

Alternate Strat

Notes:

  • This strat for the first Croctopus is much easier to start out with.
