The first level in the game is actually a pretty complicated roll puzzle.

Any% - DK Route

  • Before visiting each individual level page, be sure to visit the DKC GBC Tricks & Movement page and the DKC GBC Level Notes page.
  • Pay close attention to stamina usage and ledge extends in this level.
  • You cannot run forward at the start of the level, even if you hold B before entering the level you will always get a buffered roll. This roll will end right before the first Gnawty. Optimally you want to walk towards him for a few frames to recover some stamina now, but you can also just buffer the next roll immediately if you want to go for something safer.
  • At 0:06 you want to roll from the left side of the platform in order to get the roll to ledge extend again under the star barrel.
  • Positioning the roll at 0:11 from about where the Expresso token is grants another ledge extend. It's also possible to jump up and roll through the Necky above, but it's risky.
  • Get as close as possible to the Gnawtys at 0:13 and make sure to jump before your roll ends at 0:16.
  • The trees below the G have a stack of troll bananas which will bounce you off if you try to jump to this platform from above, so it's better to go under it and jump up to it. Rolling off these trees to get the box boost is faster than falling down and only rolling through the Klump.

Any% - Diddy Route

  • You can take Diddy here or in Reptile Rumble, both routes are within a second of each other.
  • If you choose to take Diddy here, don't swap him in until the end of the level. You need DK to roll through the Klumps due to the Krusha roll phenomenon - Diddy will get bounced back.
  • You can go for switch glitch at the end of the level to try to save half a second, but you probably won't get it most of the time.

  • Don't take Diddy here - wait until Reptile Rumble.
  • Rambi is the fastest way to get the bonuses.
  • Don't jump for the balloon, Rambi moves slower when jumping.
  • After exiting the second bonus, you can swap Rambi out in midair and roll through the Klump. Rambi air-runs faster than Donkey so don't swap immediately, but do slow down slightly or the Klump will kill you. If you are too far to the left and land on the platform, the barrel will bounce you. Just keeping Rambi here and running forward is fine too, Rambi is only slightly slower on average than DK.
  • Don't forget the stickerbook at the end of the level.
